How mascots ruined family night

Asbury hosted a family night at a Lexington Legends baseball game and our family was asked to throw out the first pitch(es). Cambel could not believe his good fortune, Oliver was equally thrilled, and Ada, although not as elated as Cambel, was excited too. A family night, a chance to throw the first pitch, watching a baseball game with friends, enjoying a summer evening...what could possibly go wrong?
Mascots. That's what could go wrong. Huge-headed excited mascots.
Recently Oliver, for reasons we have yet to ascertain, has developed a fear of puppets and mascots. And not just a little "I need a hug" fear. A really-big-total-panic kind of fear.
So although we had fun waiting for the game to start, donning our Asbury shirts, and watching them prepare the field, the second Oliver spied the mascots he went nuts. I tried numerous tactics to convince him that he would not be attacked or eaten by the mascots, but to no avail. At one point I tried retreating to the bathroom to calm his panic, but when we walked in there was a life size picture of one of the mascots, and it only made things worse. In the end I told him we were going to watch Cambel and Ada and Dad pitch even if he was screaming so that I could video it all. But I was so flustered by his overreaction that I held my phone up the whole time and never hit record.
It was not the finest moment for Oliver and me.
Thankfully the rest of the family fared better. Everyone enjoyed pitching and their small moment of fame and Cambel even got to go down to the field between innings to play a game.
Oliver calmed down enough to sit through the game, but the whole time he kept a vigilant watch for any mascot sighting and he has requested several times that we please never return to a Legends game.

 The evening held such promise...
