Cambel turns 9

Cambel is 9. Let's just sit in that for a minute...9. When we first brought him home from the hospital I couldn't see 9 days into parenting, let alone 9 years. And now here he is, one year away from double digits, and miraculously appearing to thrive despite all of our parenting failures.
I suppose your first is always special because they baptize you into parenting. They are the recipient of all your firsts as a parent, and in return, you get a front row seat to the unfolding of their personality. Cambel is special to me because he is my first, but also just because he is a special kid (disclaimer to my other 2 kids reading this when they are older: you are all special and we claim no (permanent:)) favorites). As he grows into himself, I can't write as much about him because who he is is less and less "mine" to share and more and more his story to tell. But I will say this. He is determined and brave. He is quirky and developing a sense of humor (which at times is making the painful jump from awkward to actually funny), he is smart and sensitive, he is responsive and loving. And he is ours and we love him.
This year Cambel's present was a trip to Kings Island with his Dad. He specifically asked for this and was so excited and grateful for the time with just his Dad, and for the chance to ride rollercoasters. For the sake of Kevin's feelings I will make no judgement on which of those things was most exciting to him. I think it was a trip he will always remember.

I love your descriptive words and how you capture your thoughts about your children. Wow, 9 years old, that's crazy!
