Since Kevin completed his doctorate at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, he won't be attending his graduation. Fortunately, his family has been putting on their own graduations for several years now. So, Kevin got to don a cap and gown, walk in a processional, listen to a speech and touching songs, receive a diploma, and even attend his reception. It was an emotional event--mainly because we were all laughing. At least the adults were laughing. The children seemed a bit too confused, distracted, and perhaps too alarmed to laugh.
The graduate in all his finery.
The ceremony (yes, that would be a bed sheet Jenn is wearing)
One of the musical selections was "You raise me up" sung by Joe. The other selection was Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting." This was sung by yours truly. Thankfully Laura was the accompanying pianist and she only plays the first few lines of the song. I think those lines were sufficient in expressing the depth of emotion we all felt.
The audience of children wore paper caps.
We are hoping that when it comes time for Ada to graduate, she isn't still carrying around her blanket.
Our family at the reception. Much to my surprise, I also received an honorary doctorate, complete with a diploma. My title? PhT, which stands for "Putting Hubby Through." Because behind every man with a doctorate is a woman quieting children so daddy can study and offering writing advice on a topic she knows nothing about.
Incidentally, the entire ceremony was taped. If any part of me singing Richard Marx ever ends up on youtube (and I'm talking to you Kevin), I rescind my commitment to be "right here waiting for you."
