Since our little guy is in foster care, we can send him a care package. So what to put in a package for a tiny baby that can't possibly understand what is happening to him?
A couple of outfits that may or may not fit him since we don't know his size,
an infant toy, for when he starts to reach for things and marvel at his ability to grasp objects,
a teething ring for when his gums are swollen and his baby teeth start to break through--and we aren't there to rub his gums and let him chew on our fingers,
a soft blanket to cuddle with, since we can't hold him yet,
a book of pictures and messages in French for his foster mother to read to him, so that he can see what we look like,
and a recordable version of "Guess How Much I Love You" so that he can hear our voices--since I can't sing him to sleep yet or talk to him when he wakes up, or tell him I love him "to the moon and back (or in this case, to Africa and back--which seems just about as far)."

This is really neat and almost made me cry. I think even if your baby can not understand the gift now, years from now when he reads about what you did to try to connect with him it will increase the love and bond between you. He will know that he was loved deeply and it will make him confident of his place in your family.
With you, we can't hardly wait! Oliver is blessed to have you as his family. We thank the Lord for the great love you carry in your hearts. We love you much!
Dog gone it, Maria, now I'm in tears. I'd blame the PMS but this is super sweet. Can't wait till Oliver is here.
