For quite awhile now Cambel has been saving every cent he can get his hands on. He has folded laundry, cut coupons, helped me clean the basement and asked approximately 3,000 times if I had any jobs for him and if I could please count his money. With the help of his dad he has charted his progress in the form of a bar graph.
His intense focus on saving has nothing to do with our fantastic parenting skills or Cambel's interest in preparing for a stable financial future.
It has everything to do with a Wii.
Cambel said he wanted one and we said we aren't buying one, but if you want it, save your money. We never thought he actually would, but I guess we underestimated the power of technological devices to motivate young children.
Fortunately for Cambel, his birthday coincided with his efforts to save money, and he also has very generous grandparents. So much sooner than we anticipated Cambel had saved enough to purchase a used Wii entirely on his own. He and Kevin ordered it and then Cambel entered the "how-many-times-can-I-ask-if-it-is-here-yet-waiting-phase."
Thankfully, Fed-Ex got it here quickly and yesterday afternoon as we pulled into our driveway, we saw a large box being delivered. Cambel could hardly contain himself and when he knew for sure it was his Wii he whooped and hollered (I don't think I have ever written those words, but really, that is what he did) and yelled
"This is a day in the life!"
I think he meant, this is the best day of my life, but in all the excitement it came out unintentionally funny.
I am not a fan of video games in general, but the Wii has the potential for family interaction. And we are hoping this taught Cambel a lesson in saving and patience.
As I type this he is wakeboarding. Before that he was dueling a guy named Richard. I actually am getting really into it with him and I feel all nervous about how he scores points.
I see lots of clean family fun in our future.

You will have a blast with the wii. We have great family memories playing different games. The sad part is the girls are better at some games than me:( The stories you tell of your kids make me laugh!!! They are too cute:)
