El Grande Night

El Grande Night.
I can't remember exactly how it started, but I know it was Kevin's idea (I blame all the crazy stuff on him). It basically means we eat dinner with hats on and then get ice cream. Sometimes we dance and sing about El Grande Night. It's weird, but fun.
Somehow it got removed from our family traditions for awhile, but Kevin suggested we resurrect it. And then Cambel stepped in to be the official party planning committee for El Grande Night Take 2. He planned and worked nearly all day and insisted that the party begin promptly at 6:00. (Unfortunately I was working out and the party had to be delayed, but Cambel was gracious and flexible). After dinner we headed outside, but not before first donning costumes given to us by Cambel. Ada was a princess and wore a paper crown made with love by Cambel and adorned with plastic beads and tape.

Cambel was an Indian and wore his vest and headdress and beads he made at preschool. This fit well with the outdoor theme of the party. Earlier in the day I helped Cambel build this teepee--which looked a lot better before the wind started blowing. But still awesome right? (side note: tacky teepee, ours. classy boat, not ours).
(Thankfully) I was in workout clothes and got to be a runner. Kevin was the lucky one who got to be a dinosaur and wear this paper monstrosity that was also made by Cambel at preschool. (It should be noted that we live on a very busy road and we have neighbors on all sides.
Kevin is now officially eligible for "Dad of the Year").

Cambel had us spend a little time with the teepee and purchase some stick weapons (what's a family party without a little violence?) before leading us in foot races, basketball games, and a sword fight between him and Kevin. Ada rounded out the festivities by demonstrating some dance moves for us that we were to copy. (At this point I am sure the neighbors were ready to have us committed to some sort of mental institution).
Cambel ended the night by presenting us with sticks representing the awards we won while we sat around the campfire.

Clearly it was weird and we looked crazy, but it was fun. As Cambel was heading up the stairs for bed that night I called to him and told him how fun the party was. He ran all the way down the stairs to give me a hug, beaming with satisfaction.

I for one would like to see some of those dance moves. I do hope you'll post some of those!

Kevin gets my vote for Father of the year! Does it count?

A great post. Brian and I laughed and laughed. But now we want an invitation to El Grande Night. Call it the Special Edition. I'm willing to wear costumes as long as there's ice cream.
