De-icing

Of course everyone has either lived through or heard of the ice/snow storm this past week, but here is our story. Where we are the storm brought mainly ice. And when I say mainly ice, what I mean is about 3 inches of solid frozen water covering every square inch of ground. Until yesterday we could not even open our back door and we have yet to attempt to drive our van out of its ice prison. We spent the first couple of days "iced" in together and let me tell you, it was fantastic. Since we (thankfully) did not lose power we enjoyed a mini vacation inside our warm home. We watched movies, laid around in our pajamas, played games, and relaxed for most of the week as day after day work and school were cancelled. On Friday we decided to venture out as a family. Before we loaded up in the car, this is what Kevin managed to break off of the top of his car--now imagine that over our steps and sidewalk and driveway.

After taking a hammer, salt, boiling water, and a garden shovel to our front steps Kevin managed to carve a small place for us to navigate our way down. After that we were on our own, and both he and Cambel wiped out at least twice.
We headed over to Mounds State Park to do a little sledding and oh my word! We got some serious distance and speed. I have several videos of our sled runs, but this one is the best. No speed or distance here. Somehow in the midst of a vast landscape of snow and ice, Kevin and Ada managed to hit the one obstacle.
After some serious sledding, Kevin suggested everyone get a drink Bear Grylls style.

Cambel completed our time at Mounds with some animal tracking using his skills and knowledge of tracks he picked up at preschool. He tracked a few rabbits, a squirrel, a raccoon, and a giant bird (which may or may not have just been a squirrel).

Yesterday we got hit again with more snow, which means that we now have several inches of that on top of our ice skating rink.
Spring seems so far away...

What fun family times! we actually had a week like that down here in january...not that much ice, but it doesn't take much to shut a southern city down!
