Somehow it has been 5 years since Cambel entered our family. Well, 5 years and a few days because I am behind on everything, including blogging (I'm blaming that on the multiple birthday dinners I have made, and all the cakes, cupcakes, and cookies I have baked for the kids in the last week, and not on any procrastination or laziness on my part).
For Cambel's 5th birthday we decided to surprise him with a canoe trip on the White River. He loved it. We left Ada with my mom and Kevin and I got to have the afternoon with just Cambel. What a great time we had! The weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful...and the company was even better. (The only downside was that about 2 minutes into the trip a bird flew overhead and relieved itself on my shoulder. I could have done without that).

(Turns out the life jackets weren't absolutely necessary being that the water was only about a foot deep, but we wore them obediently anyway for the first part of the trip. I think the color and shape of them really look good on us).
For Cambel's birthday dinner I decided to mix it up a little and make a double layer cake. Unfortunately, I only had 1 pan so I improvised with a pie pan. Needless to say the layers were not exactly the same size. Only a ton of chocolate frosting could round out the size differential--so really it was a blessing in disguise..who wouldn't love a cake that is mostly frosting?
Just like with Ada, I can't imagine what we did before we had Cambel (although I would say it didn't have anything to do with Transformers or race cars). Our family would be lost without his 7 am wake up call, his silly (and often completely nonsensical jokes), his lists, his serious questions, his sensitive spirit, his intense nature, his special winks (and a thousand other things that make him Cambel). We love you Cambel!

What a fun birthday, and what GREAT photos! You have a knack. I can't believe he's five, or that I completely missed his birthday. Some great future mother-in-law I've turned out to be.
Happy birthday, Cambel!
