This weekend we are in Louisville enjoying some time with Kevin's parents and Granny. One of the activities today is for Joe and Kevin and Cambel to attend a birthday party for one of Joe's relatives. Earlier I was explaining to Cambel that he would be attending a birthday party for someone "papa knows." He seemed to accept this explanation and went on with his day (which involved several basketball games in his room with running commentary on all the plays, tracing his hands with red marker that we still can't get off, and helping me pack all of the essentials for the trip, like numerous pairs of basketball shorts). Later in the car he asked me about the boy who "popped his nose" and is going to have a party. I could not for the life of me figure out what he was talking about. I tried to put him off with some vague responses, but he was insistent that I had told him about this earlier and he would not let it go until I remembered. Finally it dawned on me that when I said that the party was for someone "papa knows" he thought I said it was in honor of someone "popping' his nose." Through my laughter I tried to explain the 'misunderstanding, to which Cambel replied "but how did he pop his nose?" (As in, how can I do that so I can have a party?")
I think what concerns me about all of this is the realization that Cambel will readily and nonchalantly accept a gross misunderstanding as reality. It makes me wonder how many other things I have entirely confused him on...
