On the heels of Oliver's pneumonia diagnosis, we decided to go ahead and keep our plans to take the kids to a cabin near Red River Gorge overnight. It has been a busy semester so far and Kevin has had a lot going on at work. Plus February can be a dreary winter month, so the plan was to get away together and have fun and relax. The kids were so excited (sans Oliver who was still pretty listless) and Kevin told me it was going to be a memorable time together as a family.
We got to the beautiful cabin, started the fire, killed a couple of wasps in the cabin, made dinner, watched a movie, killed some more wasps, enjoyed the jaccuzzi, killed another wasp, and got the kids settled in their beds for the night with plans to do some exploring the next day. Yes, the wasps were annoying, but it was just a fluke right? And wasps aren't nocturnal, I assured everyone, so no problem.
Just as everyone got quiet and Oliver fell asleep, Cambel jumps up in bed, screaming that he got stung by a wasp. Kevin flipped on the light and sees a wasp on his back and in his bed. And a few more on the wall. While Cambel tailspun into a total panic, Oliver woke up completely confused and Kevin tried to figure out what to do.
The final decision (as more wasps emerged) was that we couldn't stay since apparently the wasps were coming from somewhere in the cabin and were getting more active the warmer the cabin got. So at nearly 10 o'clock we loaded everyone in the van and drove home.
We told the kids it will be a really funny story someday. Ada latched on to this and spent the first half of the drive home making jokes. Cambel failed to see much humor in it, and Oliver remained entirely confused about the whole trip. I told Kevin that he was right, it sure was a memorable time.

Before the attack of the wasps, Oliver rallied and enjoyed the fire (after a dip in the jaccuzzi).
