Two mornings a week Tessa and her baby sister come over to our house, and another morning Oliver heads over to Tessa's house. These two are just a few months apart in age and they have been bound together by PBS, suckers, and potty training. When my friend Sarah and I first started this kid exchange, neither of the kids were thrilled with the new arrangement. So we did what wise and seasoned mothers do--we bribed them with PBS and suckers. And now, even though they love going to each other's houses, they still insist on the suckers and PBS. And we are happy to oblige.
As if suckers and endless episodes of Daniel Tiger weren't enough, these two also did some serious potty training together (which led to some pretty funny stories, not all of which are blog appropriate). I suppose once you share that with someone, you have to be friends for life (although I suppose that when they are teens they will not appreciate us talking about the co-potty training time).
Both Oliver and Tessa can hold their own and neither of them lack energy, spunk, or self-assertiveness. It will be fun to see their friendship develop over time. For now, they are happy just to eat suckers and watch PBS together.
