Ada and her best friend at school hatched a plan for a "spring celebration," which is a tricky way of convincing your moms to host a party when it is not your birthday (yes, a la this party last year). Her friend's mom thought it was a great idea and said she would host it, so how could I say no? Plus I am a sucker for Ada's enthusiastic plans because she is just so cute when she talks about them (hopefully this will pass before she is a teenager). A few days after we sent out the invitations, Ada walked solemnly into the house after school--quite different from her usual entrance which begins with her waving like a prom queen to her bus until it is gone. With the flair of the dramatic that has come to define Ada, she said very seriously, "I have some news.....(dramatic pause)...Addy will not be coming to the spring celebration." (another pause before delving into the details of Addy's spring break plans). Fortunately Addy was quickly replaced by another friend, so all is not lost.
The point of writing this all out (besides preserving for the kids' future therapist proof that I was sometimes nice), is so that I can remember Ada at this stage; her drama, her creativity that often veers into that-will/could-never-happen-territory, and her enthusiasm for friends and planning--all wrapped up in her cute, little, 5 year old self.
