a winter update

Someday I might post about Christmas (but since we are already in March, it may be a lost cause). For now, here is what we have been up to (in no particular chronological order, or order of importance)...
Potty training. After several discouraging episodes, we seem to be gaining some traction. Besides looking so stinking cute in his underwear, Oliver has used this season of training to entertain us with various comments about eliminating and underwear (which he pronunces "underwur"). At one point, feeling slightly desperate, I made an effort to personalize his underwear so he would be less likely to soil it. One day he said "Hi trucks. my name is Oliver Brown." How polite to introduce himself before he urinated on them. He also frequently counts to a random number and then asks "is it coming?" which of course I unfortunately cannot answer. I think I will forever treasure the look of total panic that has come over his face when he has realized he needs the toilet NOW and then takes off running. I will spare you the details of how that *sometimes* turns out.

Bizarre rashes and hives. In the course of 1 week Cambel managed to break out in hives, display symptoms of the stomach flu as well as a bad cold, and break out in a rash. You would think he was either the victim of a rare disorder or at least strep throat, but no, none of these. Just a strange virus. (I took this picture to email to my mom, but why not post it for everyone to see).

A haircut. Ada's hair was getting too long and tangly, but I was trying to let her fulfill her dream of having long hair. Finally Kevin intervened and we both worked to encourage her that shorter hair would equal cuter hair. In the end she miraculously agreed and everyone is happier (and she is even cuter).
A Starbucks date with daddy. Kevin is so good to take the kids out individually when he can. I hope that the kids remember these dates fondly and know how much their dad loves them.
Headphones. This isn't really news, but it is cute.

Chester. He came for a visit and he is ENORMOUS. I felt like a proud grandparent--happy to see him and happy he was not my responsibility and was going home with someone else.

Family date to Fazolis. Thanks to Ada slaving away on her homework every night, she earned enough coupons to get all the kids free meals, which of course means free drinks. The amount of pop Cambel and Ada consumed and the amount of chocolate milk Oliver drank, far surpassed the small amount of food they ate. But once in awhile drinking your calories is fun, especially when it is free.

Cheer camp. This was super exciting for Ada and I will never tell her (until she is old enough to read the blog of course) that I don't think cheerleading is in her future. Regrettably, her coordination skills and ability to follow predetermined dance steps were inherited from me. For that I am sorry Ada.

Cool hikes. This one Kevin and Cambel took together. Kevin said it is hard to tell from the picture, but the water (just past Cambel) was frighteningly far below.
Valentine's day. We had our traditional fancy heart pancake breakfast and a new friend took one of my favorite pictures of the kids (I love it because mainly because it is not at all perfect and it makes me smile).

Not pictured: A visit from my parents who we don't get to see nearly as much as I would like to. And another visit from my sister Emily who I also don't get to seem as much as I want. It was so fun to have them here.
Not pictured: sledding. The loads of ice we have had this winter made for some pretty great runs down the hill behind the elementary school.
Also not pictured: 4 million snow days. I have known for awhile now that I am not a "fun" mom. The snow days made this painfully obvious. If there was every any doubt about whether or not the kids should be in public school versus homeschooling, it would be completely gone now. Never ever under any circumstances should my kids have to stay in our house with me for more than 2 days in a row. Ever. Don't get me wrong. I love my kids more than they will ever know. Just not in a "stay with me all day" kind of way.

That about sums it up--in a long-winded-picture-heavy kind of way. Our life is full, sometimes full of endless snow days and wet pants, but mostly full of good things and sweet things and things that I file away to remember when these days are past.
