A few more Arkansas pictures...and a long trip home

We had a great time with Emily and Adriel and I am so happy that it worked out for us to visit them. It was hard to say goodbye.

The trip home turned out to be less than ideal. We left at 5:30 am for the airport and flew into Chicago. If you have ever flown into or out of Chicago before, I should not need to continue. You already know the story. But for memory sake, as well as my own need to cathartically discuss our traumatic ordeal, I will go on. Our flight out of Chicago was delayed indefinitely due to "mechanical failure." (Which, I have come to find out can mean anything from a passenger broke a tray table to a computer has failed...both of which happened to us. We are so lucky!). We finally boarded the plane after a long wait and began taxiing out of the gate, only to stop and wait, and wait, and wait. Eventually the pilot came on and informed us of another mechanical failure, so we were stuck on the plane (with two small hungry and tired children) until it was fixed. In the meantime, dark clouds (which had already figuratively gathered the moment the decision was made to fly through Chicago) began gathering in the sky above and soon it was pouring down rain. This apparently delayed the takeoff of several hundred other flights because by the time our plane was fixed (again), we were like 800th in line for takeoff. More waiting. Eventually we did land in Indianapolis, only to wait just outside the gate area because the pilot could not get anyone at the airport to answer the phone and tell us what gate to park at. (Does this sound strange to anyone else besides me? I wasn't aware that was how this whole gate thing worked. I naively assumed that someone was expecting our flight and had a gate prepared in advance). So about 30 minutes after we landed, we finally got off the plane, got our luggage, took a shuttle to the car, and started the 3 hour drive home. The kids were really phenomenal in how they handled the day, but by the time we were about 5 minutes from home both of them were bawling and Cambel was repeating "I want to be home!" Me too Cambel, me too.
Of course, as Kevin and I have decided, the good ideas come too late and the bad ideas come to your mind first. But the better and faster idea would have been to rent a bicycle and bike back from Chicago (okay, maybe I am exaggerating, but I do want to avoid O'Hare airport in the future).

Thank goodness Mom was there to help.
We took turns calming Ada down.
